Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
59 years ago today, on the 29th May 1964, Private Edris Saundres (Sanders, Saunders) Rees, referred to as Eddie, 30th Battalion (Reg No-527), smelter from Fourth Street, Boolaroo, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 68. ANGLICAN 2-113A. 66.
Born at Boolaroo, New South Wales on the 7th February 1896 to Evan and Sarah Ann Rees; husband of Jean Ann Rees nee Roarty (married 1922, Marrickville, N.S.W., died 27.10.1990, sleeping here), Eddie enlisted on the 18th July 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 9th November 1915.
Wounded in action - 23.7.1916 (GSW chest, Battle of Pozieres).
Eddie returned home on the 2nd December 1916, being discharged medically unfit (GSW chest & lung) on the 12th February 1917.
Mr. Rees’s name has been inscribed on the Boolaroo District Pictorial Roll of Honour, Boolaroo Methodist Church Roll of Honour, Boolaroo Presbyterian Church Honor Roll and the Sulphide Corporation Pty Ltd Cockle Creek Works Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies at Eddie’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
