Thomas Bela Usher Bowling enlisted 21st March 1916 and was posted to the 2nd Tunnelling Company.
He was awarded the Military Cross in France following an action at Bellicourt on 29th September 1918. (See London Gazette Reference 31583 4 October 1919, Page 157) His MC citation reads: During the operation commencing 29th September, 1918, in the neighbourhood of Bellicourt, he was employed in making reconnaissances for wells and water-points. He kept up with the infantry and brought back valuable information. Under heavy shell fire, he cleared wells in the towns and villages captured and was largely instrumental in providing water for the fighting troops. He showed great gallantry and initiative.
Bowling returned to Australia and was discharged on 1st November 1919. His NOK was listed as his wife Mrs Ruby Ida May Bowling of 78 Southern Road, Armadale, Victoria (Australia. When he enlisted his address was Yarra Glen, Victoria.
