Biography contributed by Sydney Technical High School

Harold Gordon Moore was born in Camden, Sydney, Australia in the year of 1897. His father was Arthur Valentine Moore and mother was Kate Kemish. Harold was one of six siblings, which included his brothers: Aubrey Kemish Moore (born 4th of July 1899), Sidney Millard Moore and Robert Valentine Moore, and his sisters: Edna Kate Moore and Clara Muriel Moore. (1)

Raised as a Methodist Christian in religion, he resided and grew up in “Glenmore”, Camden, Sydney, New South Wales and attended Sydney Technical High School in his high school years, between the years of 1912 and 1915. (2) In his second school year in 1913 he received both his intermediate certificate as well as achieved a School Prize award and eventually attained his leaving certificate in 1915. (3) Within this same year, Harold additionally participated in an apprenticeship program under ‘Griffin and Harrison’, with this lasting for 12 months. Upon the completion of his apprenticeship, he was then employed as a Surveyor Assistant in 1916. (4) Passing a medical examination and application and attestation papers, at the age of 20 years and 2 months Harold was enlisted into the AIF (Australian Imperial Force) on the 5th of March 1917. (5) According to the primary source in the form of Harold’s enlistment attestation papers, in response to questions on previous military service, it states “U.T. 4 yrs and 9th L. Horse (Militia) 1 yrs” (6)

Harold Gordon Moore enlisted as a private under the regimental number 3161, a part of the 11th Reinforcements (April) Camel Corps. (7) His unit embarked Australia from Port Sydney to Suez Egypt on the 9th of May 1917, disembarking at Suez on the 20th of June. (8) Harold trained at the isolation camp ‘Moascar’ and eventually was transferred to the Anzac Reserve Depot on the 16th of July. He was then taken on strength to the 3rd Anzac Battalion and the Anzac Provost Corps, assigned the regimental number 3161A.

On the 14th of September he was then transferred to the 1st Light Horse Training Regiment at Moascar, joining with a position on the training Cadre, overseeing and conducting the training of fellow soldiers. (9)

He then transferred to the 1st Light Horse Regiment as a private after 14 days of training. (11) During that time, the 1st Light Horse Regiment would have been serving in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign within the Middle East, aimed at opposing and breaking the Ottoman Empire’s defences in order to advance into Palestine. Harold would have served in conflicts associated with breaking the enemy’s lines, in order to leave the Ottoman Empire weak and defeated following the failures of the Gallipoli campaign. (12)

While serving in the campaign on the 3rd of November, Harold Gordon Moore was wounded in combat in the form of a gunshot wound in his right cheek, being admitted to the 14th Australian General Hospital. He was eventually discharged back into the 1st Light Horse Training Regiment, participating in training a second time until he was taken on strength to the 1st Light Horse Regiment again on the 5th of December. (13)

On the 9th of April 1918, Harold was transported into the 66th Casualty Clearing Station following sickness in the form of vomiting and diarrhoea. (14) He was discharged on the 19th of June back to Moascar to resume his service and returned to active duty by rejoining the 1st Light Horse Regiment on the 12th of July 1918. (15)

Harold Gordon Moore was eventually promoted to the position of Lance Corporal in the 1st Light Horse Regiment on the 1st of January 1919, as well as being selected a temporary Corporal from the 12th of January to the 6th of February. (16)

Harold Gordon Moore travelled back to Australia on the 13th of March 1919 from Kantara.(18)

Howard Gordon Moore arrived back in Australia on the 24th of April and was discharged from the AIF to resume his former occupation. (19) Resuming his occupation as a Surveyor’s Assistant, he was promoted to a Surveyor sometime before 1930, with the exact date of this promotion being unclear. Along with this, Howard married Gwendolyn Florence Flaxman in New South Wales in 1923, registered in Chatswood. Following his marriage, Howard lived with his wife in the suburb of Roseville in Sydney, New South Wales.  On the 25th of November 1935 and the 6th of June 1946, his father and mother died. Eventually on the 21st of July 1957, Harold’s wife Gwendolyn Florence Moore also passed away. Finally, on the 8th of July 1961 around the age of 64, Harold Gordon Moore passed away in Royal North Shore Hospital.
