Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Frederick William Lewis was born in London and came out to Tasmania in about 1898. In England he had served over four years with the Royal Marine Light Infantry. He also stated on enlistment that he had been a member of the Tasmanian Police Force for over nine years. He married Mabel Ricketts in 1901 and was the father of five children.
He was severely wounded in the head when the Germans raided the front line trenches held by the 40th Battalion on the 31 January 1917. A preceding heavy bombardment of the trenches killed 15 men of the Battalion.
Frederick's wife, three sons and two daughters all received pensions from the government.
