156 Private Alfred Edwards 12th Battalion was born in Bagdad, Tasmania on the 3 June 1898. He was working as a labourer for a blacksmith in Bellerive, Tasmania, when he enlisted on 24 August 1914, age 16 years and 2 months. He gave his age as 19 years 2 months. Alfred served at the landing on Anzac and survived until he received severe gunshot wounds to his left thigh at Lone Pine on 7 August 1915 and was transferred to No 3 Australian General Hospital, Mudros. He died on 12 August 1915 and was buried in the Portianos Military Cemetery, Lemnos, Greece. He would have been 17 years and 2 months of age. His father stated in his roll of honour circular that he was 17 years of age. Alfred’s brother, Private Walter Edwards, served with the 52nd Battalion and was wounded in France.
