Born on 7 May 1886 at Yatta near Williamstown, South Australia, Andrew James Patterson was the son of William Patterson and Emily Dew. Before enlisting in the First World War, he worked as a labourer. Andrew James Patterson was 5'10 "in height and weighed 166 lbs. He had a medium complexion with brown eyes and brown hair. At the age of 29, he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 11 January 1916 and was assigned to the 43rd Infantry Battalion with the service number 357.
He embarked from Adelaide aboard HMAT Afric (A19) on 9 June 1916.
Andrew Patterson returned to Australia on 20 May 1919 and was discharged from the AIF. After the war, he returned to Williamstown, where he lived until his death on 6 July 1956 at the age of 70. He was buried in the Williamstown Cemetery, with his grave located in Plot 7, Section SB, Block J, Row 1.
