Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Stanley Wilkinson (Service No:464) enlisted in the AIF on 16 September 1914 and was attached to 8th Light Horse Regiment when he embarked from Melbourne on 25 February 1915, bound for Gallipoli Peninsula via Alexandria on board HMAT A16 Star of Victoria. Private Wilkinson served in Egypt with 8th Light Horse Regiment, attending the Imperial School of Instruction in Zeitoun in 1917 (Trooper, Signaller). On 10 June 1919 he embarked from Port Said for England on board HT Ellenga, and on 22 November 1919 embarked from England for Melbourne on board HT Aeneas. Private Wilkinson was attached to 8th Light Horse Regiment at Discharge on 8 February 1920.

Stan was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1892, fourth of eight children of Henry James Wilkinson (b1852 in Korumburra, Victoria) and Emma Roughead (b1864 in Chiltern, Victoria). Henry and Emma married in 1883 in Melbourne, Victoria and lived there and in Kardella via Korumburra. According to his Obituary (Trove; 1941) Henry started work at twelve years of age as a Road Haulier and boy driver between Melbourne and Mt Pleasant, carting sleepers for the main Gippsland railway. Henry and Emma settled in Kardella via Korumburra, where they raised their family and Henry worked as a Labourer.

Stan worked in Korumburra as a Labourer before enlisting in the AIF in 1914. Returning to Korumburra following his Discharge, he was working as a Labourer in 1922 when, in Mornington, he married Elsie Florence Garlick (b1890 at Schnapper Point (Mornington), Victoria). Stan and Elsie settled in Merbein, Mildura where Stan was a Labourer, returning in the early 1930s to Mornington, where they raised their family and Stan was a Labourer and Storeman. Stan died in 1965 and Elsie in 1974.
