Edward was the son of Martin McHougan CONLIN & Bridget Anastasia GUERIN and was born near Meadows, SA.

He married Lilly May JOLLY on the 9th of May 1905 in St Patrick's Church, Adelaide.

Living in Pt Pirie when he enlisted.

After he was discharged Edward & Lilly moved to 45 Rundle Street, Adelaide.

Edward was admitted into the Exhibition Isolation Hospital on the 6th of April 1919 with Influenza and died 6 days later.

RSL has determined this is an unmarked grave and will be referring this matter to the SA Headstones Project Group.

Edward CONLIN joined the AIF on 03.02.1916 and was given service number 1629.   He was allocated to the 43rd Infantry Battalion.

He has embarked for England with the Battalion and on 07.08.1916 is recorded as having been taken on strength to the 11th Training Battalion in England.

On 29.12.1016, he has been admitted to hospital and it appears he continued to suffer ongoing health problems.

On 18.02.1917, he has been returned to Australia as medically unfit with his file noted as haematuria (blood in urine).   There are some extensive medical notes on his file.    

He has been admitted to the Keswick Military hospital on his return to Australia.   On his file was his refusal to have surgery for his bladder complaint but then signed a letter of consent to undergo the surgery dated 23.05.1917.

Both he and his wife were granted military pensions from 16.10.1917 then it was varied from 30.07.1918.

It is noted he was discharged as medically unfit from 15.10.1917.

He was awarded the British War Medal which appears to have been sent to his wife on 10.02.1922, some three years after his death.

His military file has noted on it in a memo dated 16.06.1919 that the soldier died subsequent to lodging claim. Payment authorised through District under Deceased Soldier’s Estate Act.

Edward CONLIN spent a lot of time in the Keswick Military Hospital after his return from active service.   He was admitted to the Exhibition Isolation Hospital on 06.04.1919 with Spanish Flu (influenza) and died on 12.04.1919.
