Private Joseph Brown Barclay

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery, Newcastele

A forgotten digger of The Great War and Sandgate Cemetery (1 of 152).

76 years ago today, on the 18th May 1943, Private Joseph Brown Barclay, 35th Battalion, iron moulder and tractor engine driver from Charlton Street, Wickham, New South Wales and Penshurst Street, Penshurst, New South Wales and 31 Fern Street, Islington, N.S.W. and 23 Bruce Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., father of 3, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 61 (no funeral notice located). GENERAL-28. 53.

Born at Balmain, New South Wales on the 7th June 1881 to Joseph Brown and Margaret Barclay nee Brady; husband of Minnie Marian Barclay nee Frogley (married 1908, died 1964, CATHOLIC 3-88. 70., unmarked grave) of 101 Hunter Street, Wickham, N.S.W., Joseph enlisted April 1916 at Sydney, N.S.W.

Mr Barclay was invalided home December 1917 suffering from chronic eczema.

Joseph’s name has not been located on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

Resting in an unmarked grave for 72 years, I have placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

A Digger of The Great War resting at Sandgate Cemetery, Honour and Dignity to be restored.

79 years ago today, on the 18th May 1943, Private Joseph Brown Barclay, 35th Battalion (Reg No-2278), iron moulder and tractor engine driver from Charlton Street, Wickham, New South Wales and Penshurst Street, Penshurst, N.S.W. and 31 Fern Street, Islington, N.S.W. and 99 Hunter Street, Newcastle, N.S.W. and 23 Bruce Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W. and 5 Corlette Street, Newcastle, N.S.W., father of four (Joseph Brown, died 1912, unmarked grave - PRESBYTERIAN-21SE. 45., Minnie, Florence A, Charles J. B.), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 61. GENERAL-28. 53.

No death or funeral notice located.

Born at Balmain, New South Wales on the 7th June 1881 to Joseph Brown and Margaret Barclay nee Brady; husband of Minnie Marian Barclay nee Frogley (married 1908, Woollahra, N.S.W., died 1964, CATHOLIC 3-88. 70., unmarked grave) of Charlton Street, Wickham, New South Wales and 101 Hunter Street, Wickham, N.S.W. and 33 Nelson Street, Wallsend, N.S.W., Joe enlisted April 1916 at Sydney, N.S.W.

Joe was invalided home December 1917 (chronic eczema), being discharged medically unfit on the 30th January 1918.

Did not receive Victory Medal.
Mr. Barclay’s name has been inscribed on the 2nd Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (photo).
I located Joseph resting in an unmarked grave, so August 2015 I placed a cross at the gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

I submitted an application to DVA October 2018 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip, but unfortunately this was declined November 2018.

A Plaque will be placed at the gravesite courtesy of the Forgotten Diggers Headstone Project to restore Honour and Dignity to Joe.

Younger brother James Brown Barclay (M.S.M.), 34th Battalion, Reg No-362, born 1887, died 29.10.1940, age 53, father of three (Barbara May, James Brown, Gloria), was also resting at the cemetery in an unmarked grave. BAPTIST-D NE. 11.
Wounded in action - 3.3.1918 (GSW left thigh and left foot, severe).

I placed a cross at James’s unmarked grave August 2015, and submitted an application to DVA May 2018 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip, and this was accepted June 2018.

Completed October 2018.

Lest We Forget.
