Biography contributed by Karan CAMPBELL-DAVIS

Hubert Ernest ROSE was born in 1893 in Perth, Western Australia, the second of six sons born to Amy Edith (nee STONE) and James ROSE (who later served as a Major, and WA fourth contingent commander, in the 2nd Boer War).

A 22 year old single station hand at the time, Hubert enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in Perth, Western Australia, on 12th May 1916.  Allocated the regimental number 3070 and the rank of Private, Hubert completed his recruit training at Claremont, after which he was assigned as a Trooper with the 23rd reinforcements for the 10th Light Horse Regiment (LHR).  On 22nd January 1917, Harold embarked in Fremantle aboard HMAT Bulla, for active service overseas.

On 16th February 1917, the 23rd reinforcements for 10th LHR disembarked at Suez, and marched into the Isolation Camp at Moascar.  They remained there until 2nd March, when they marched into camp with the 3rd Light Horse Training Regiment.  The 25 men of the 23rd reinforcements were taken on strength with 10th LHR on 18th April 1917, in Jemmi.

On 5th May, barely two weeks after he joined his Regiment, Hubert was evacuated sick, and admitted to the Citadel Military Hospital in Cairo with disability (piles) on 10th May.  He was discharged from a Convalescent Depot in Moascar on 1st July, and returned to his Unit in Shellal three days later.

On 27th September 1917, Hubert was again evacuated sick to the 24th Stationary Hospital in Kantara.  He was transferred to the 14th Australian General Hospital in Abbassia on 2nd October, for haemorrhoids.  Hubert was discharged from the Convalescent Depot in Abbassia and taken on strength with the 3rd Light Horse Training Regiment in Moascar on 9th December 1917.

On 22nd February 1918, Hubert marched into the D.M.C. Rest Camp at Port Said, but at the end of his four week break, he was again admitted to the 14th Australian General Hospital on 22nd March, with an anal fissure.  On 17th April Hubert was returned to the Rest Camp, and marched out to Moascar on 29th April.  As a result of his repeated hospitalisations, Hubert was required to go before a Medical Board in Moascar on 9th September 1918, where he was classed as 'B2' (not fit for active duty), due to ongoing issues with haemorrhoids.  A further Medical Board on 22nd December 1918 classed him as 'C' (medically unfit for further service), due to piles and anal fistula.

Hubert embarked in Suez aboard HMAT Aeneas on 1st January 1919, for return to Australia.  He was subsequently discharged medically unfit on 20th March 1919 in the 5th Military District, Perth.  For his service, he was later awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.  Two of Hubert's younger brothers, Harold Mervyn and Wilfred Lionel ROSE, also served in the AIF, both of whom also returned to Australia.

On 9th August 1924, Hubert married Ella Matilda CLIFTON in St Paul's Church, West Perth, Western Australia.  He died in Perth on 17th January 1977, aged 84.  He was buried with his wife in Karrakatta Cemetery in the Anglican Section 0314, but these graves were removed due to redevelopment, in 2022.
