Leading Aircraftman James Ronald Balfour (Service No:19179) enlisted in the RAAF on 16 October 1940 at No 1 Recruiting Centre Melbourne and was an Aircraftman I attached to No 2 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) and No 4 School of Technical Training (STT) Adelaide - mustered as Fitter. He was promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 11 March 1944 with 86 Squadron and served with 1 Reserve Personnel Pool (RPP), No 5 Repair and Servicing Unit (RSU) and No 13 (City of Darwin) Squadron (ARD). LAC Balfour was attached to 2 Personnel Depot at Discharge on 16 January 1947.

Jim was born at Culcairn, NSW in 1915, only surviving child of James Angus Balfour (b1886 in Culcairn, NSW) and Bessie (Ruby) Quick (b1882 in Molong, NSW). James (an Overseer) and Ruby married in 1914 in Wagga Wagga, NSW and settled at Culcairn where James was Overseer at Round Hill Estate via Culcairn. Following Ruby's death in 1932, James remarried in 1934 in Melbourne, Victoria to Alison Maxwell Reid (b1908 in Melbourne, Victoria). James and Alison settled in Culcairn, NSW where James owned the sheep and cattle property 'Kanimbla' and was a Grazier. 

Jim attended Malvern Grammar School and then Diesel Engineering College in Sydney before working as a Jackeroo on Table Tops and Tubbo Estates (sheep and cattle studs). He joined his father on the family property 'Kanimbla' as Overseer and also helped his father manage his grandfather's property. In 1941 in Melbourne, Victoria Jim married Dorothy Grace Notman (b1917 in Skipton, Victoria). Following his Discharge, Jim and Dorothy settled at Culcairn where they raised their family and Jim was a Farmer and Grazier. Dorothy died in 1996 and Jim in 2002.
