Biography contributed by Paul Lemar

Edgar was the son of Joseph Stevens WILLIS & Maria SMITH and was born on the 9th of November 1883 in Kapunda, SA.

His parents were married on the 12th of May 1878 in Kapunda, SA. He was the fifth child born into this marriage of 6 children.

His mother was previously married to Samuel Robert SNELL on the 14th of January 1864 St George’s Anglican Church, Gawler, SA and they had moved to Allens Creek Village, 5kms North West of Kapunda, where Samuel was a boot maker.

They had 4 children before Samuel had died on the 12th of February 1872. The previous day he had gone into a paddock to catch his horse, intending to ride to church at Kapunda. He took hold of the animal by the tail, of which the animal was accustomed to take in good part. On this occasion, however, he resented and kicked out his hind legs, striking Samuel severely on the chest. Dr. Brack's medical advice was obtained; but the injuries sustained were so severe that they resulted in his death the following day.

Edgar moved to Western Australia and was a miner in 1915 and living in Leonora.

Edgar enlisted into the 10th Light Horse, 14th Reinforcements on the 12th of November 1915 in Blackboy Hill, WA and was allotted the service number 2086.

He named his father; Joseph, as his next of kin.

He embarked from Fremantle on the 16th of February 1916 for Egypt.

On the 6th of June 1916 he embarked from Egypt and arrived in France 7 days later.

He returned to Australia aboard the “China” and disembarked on the 1st of June 1919.

He married Doris Emily BABB on the 2nd of August 1919 in Perth, WA. Doris was born in 1883 in Sydney, NSW.

In 1920 they lived at Mt Clifford, Leonora.

Edgar was the licensee of the Doyle’s Well Hotel in Doyle’s Well in 1921.

Edgar died on the 4th of July 1973 in Kalgoorlie, WA and was buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery; Anglican, Lawn 6, Plot R016.
