Wilfred Victor KNIGHT (Service Number 710) was born at Waipori in New Zealand on 6th April 1890.  He first joined the NSW Government Railways and Tramways as a tram conductor in Sydney in December 1911 but resigned in April 1912.  In April 1913 he joined the Railways in Junee as a casual cleaner, being made permanent in September 1913.  In December he took the next step on the career path of an engineman when he was made fireman.  It was as a fireman that he enlisted in the AIF in Sydney in August 1914.

He was allotted to the 1st Battalion and embarked from Sydney in October 1914 aboard HMAT ‘Afric’. He was sent via Egypt to the Dardanelles.

He was wounded in action at Gallipoli between 25th and 29 April 1915.  He died of his wounds between 27th and 29th April 1915 while he was at sea, aboard HMAT ‘Seang Choon’. He was buried at sea on 2nd May. 

His was the first death of a New Zealander in the AIF notified to the New Zealand government.  He is remembered with honour on the Lone Pine Memorial.
