Ernest was the eldest son of Archibald Appin Lorne Stewart McCole (b1895 in Newry, Victoria) and Annie Flora Blogg (b1900 in Suffolk, England). Annie arrived in Melbourne, Victoria in 1911 on board the Geelong. Archibald (a Farmer) and Annie married in 1921 in Newry, Victoria. In 1924 the family was living in Melbourne, where Archie worked as a Factory Hand before returning to Maffra in 1928 and working as a Factory Hand and Driver.

Ernest was living in Melbourne and working as an Apprentice Electrician and Storeman in April 1941 when he enlisted in the RAAF as an Aircraftman (Service No:1390). He served overseas with 2 Squadron in 1945 and was a Corporal attached to 1 Personnel Depot when he was Discharged in February 1946.

In 1943 Ernest married Phyllis Jean Watt (b1924 in Melbourne, Victoria). Following his Discharge, Ernest and Phyllis settled in Melbourne, where Ernest worked as a Mechanic and Electrician. He died in 1972 and Phyllis (who remarried) died in 2010.
