Lt Robert Andrew Malcolm Murray
11 January 1896 - 17 June 1917

Robert Murray enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) shortly after completing his exams for his 2nd year of Medicine (1st year Honours) at Sydney University.

Robert's sister Brita provided an account of the circumstances surrounding her 21 year old brother's death to The University of Sydney. The account was based on a letter she received from a “brother officer” following Robert’s death:
At the time of his death he was Intelligence officer to the Batt. After the taking of Messines on the early morning of June 17th 1917 it was his task to push through the front line and set out direction tapes and flags for the Battalion to form up for an attack on an objective about a thousand yards ahead. He started out with his Intelligence section early in the morning and when coming up Messines Ridge at 7.30 was wounded by a shell in his left shoulder. His corporal dressed the wound and tried to persuade him to go back but he refused. On arriving at the right place he left all but one man in cover and went out under heavy fire to set the tapes out, when they both fell, shot through the head by machine gun fire.

Robert Murray is commemorated at the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, and at War Memorials at Wentworth Falls and Sydney Grammar School.
Lest we forget.
