Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
John Pelin enlisted at 48 years of age, stating he was 45 years old. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he came to Australia during 1892 and he worked as a miner at Mount Morgan, Queensland. He was posted to the Mining Corps of the AIF.
Married to Phebe Elizabeth, his eldest son, Sidney James Pelin, born in 1900, was killed in action at Gueudecourt in France on 1 February 1917, serving with the 15th Battalion, at 17 years of age.
John arrived in France during October 1916 but was sent back to England just after his son’s death during February 1917. He was suffering with rheumatism in both feet and as he was 49 years of age he was returned to Australia soon after as “overage” and discharged during August 1917.
He passed away during 1923, at 56 years of age.
