Sydney was born in Brisbane to parents William (Willie) Atwell and Mary Ann (nee Brennan) Atwell and one of 6 known siblings.

His mother would died age 38 years in 1904 when he was 12 years old.

He would enlist on 16th August 1915 and would spend some time in training depots at Claremont camp.  Before being accepted fit enough to proceed overseas with a later draft of reinforcements of the 10th A.L.H.R. than his friends in the group photo which left some months earlier.

Sid in life would engaged in mining pursuits at around Marble Bar.

Sid died at Port Hedland Hospital age 47 years.

He was buried at Port Hedland cemetery with military honours on 31st December with old 10th A.L.H.R. comrade Alfred Hull as one the pall bearers.
