Son of George and Emma Bowman CLAREY

Husband of Esther CLAREY; 3 children

Accidentally injured during a period of bombing instruction, 25 February 1917, sustaining a wound over the left ear, fracture of the skull, and laceration of the brain.

Died in Fargo Military Hospital. Jury in Coroner's Court returned a verdict of accidental death.

Died on this date - 23rd April.......Robert Clarey was born at Ipswich, Queensland around 1874. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) under the name of Robert CAREY on 16th October, 1916 as a 35 year old, married, Miner with 3 children from Valley, Brisbane, Queensland.

Private CAREY arrived in England on 3rd March, 1917 for further training before being sent to the War Front & was posted to 7th Training Battalion at Rollestone, Wiltshire on 3rd March, 1917.
Private CAREY was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire on 6th April, 1917 with influenza & discharged on 19th April, 1917. He was readmitted on 23rd April, 1917 with a wound to head - seriously ill.

Private Robert CAREY died at 9.25 p.m. on 23rd April, 1917 at Fargo Military Hospital of a compound fracture of skull (accidental). A Coroner's Court was held on 24th April, 1917 & it was found that he had died from injuries received during bombing instructions & had been admitted to Fargo Military Hospital on 23rd April, 1917 suffering from a wound over left ear, fracture of skull & laceration of brain substance. He was operated on but died the same night. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.

Private CAREY was buried in Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire where 140 other WW1 Australian Soldiers are buried.
