"...7238 Wheeler Sergeant (later Sergeant) Norman Frederick Reid, 5th Field Artillery Brigade, of Crows Nest, NSW, son of William and Lucy Jane Reid. A mechanic prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Persic (A34) on 18 November 1915 and was killed in action at Flers, France, on 19 November 1916, aged 21. Norman Frederick REID (Service Number 7238) was born on 25th October 1895 at Redfern. He began an apprenticeship as a fitter at Eveleigh Locomotive Workshops on 21st August 1911. He was still serving that apprenticeship on 14th July 1915 when he was granted leave to join the Expeditionary Forces.
He enlisted a Liverpool on 15th July 1915. He claimed his ‘Trade or Calling as ‘Engineer’ and gave his mother, Lucy Jane Reid as his next of kin, though this was later changed to his father. He gave his age as 19 years and 8 months. He also claimed military experience with the 33rd Engineers.
He was initially allocated to the 10th Reinforcements to the 4th Australian Infantry Battalion. Reid was soon transferred to the 5th Field Artillery Brigade and it was with this unit that he embarked HMAT ‘Persic’ at Sydney on 18th November 1915. Just before his embarkation, on 11th November 1915, Reid was promoted from Gunner to ‘Wheeler Sergeant’. He reached Egypt on 21st December and was briefly part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force.
He embarked HMT ‘Haverford’ at Alexandria for passage through Marseilles to join the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front in France.
He reached that port city on 25th March 1916.
He was killed in action in France on 19th November 1916. He was believed to be buried in the vicinity of Longueval. This location was later identified, and Reid’s remains were exhumed after the war and re-interred at Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, 5¾ miles SW of Bapaume.
