Joseph Hedley Salter

Joe served in the WW1 in France and Gallipoli. He was private 6084, 12th Battalion. He embarked from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia on 16/6/1916, on the "Ballarat" returning to Australia on board the "Ormonde" on the 30th June 1919. Being discharged from the Army on 26/9/1919.

It would appear from Joe's War Service Records that he had a rather tough time of it while overseas, contracting mumps, boils, scabies and venereal diseases.
Joseph also went AWOL on several occasions but only for short periods of time, and each time he would have his pay docked.

Joseph Salter was issued with three medals, 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Successful Social.

On Friday evening last, in the local Town Hall, a successful social was conducted for the purpose of presenting medals to the following returned men : Sergeant; Haley, Corporal Griffiths, Privates R. Macmichael, G. Barber, Cross (2), Fletcher, Andrews. Salter, Merrick, Dwyer, Deacon, Bailey (2), Blackwood (deceased), Richards, Budgeon.


At the time of his death Joseph was living at Brunswick, Victoria.
