11 May 1917: Honoured Military Cross, German Withdrawal to Hindenburg Line and Outpost Villages, For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Beaumetz on 23 March 1917 when he organised a fourteen man party and succeeded in clearing the enemy out of the village - on one occassion attacking and dispersing 100 of the enemy. Although wounded he remained on duty until preparing to lead a further charge when he was severely wounded by an enemy shell.
