Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

An Original Anzac resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

74 years ago today, on the Wednesday morning of the 27th November 1946, Driver Henry (Harry) Albert Hayes, 1st Australian Field Artillery Brigade Headquarters (Reg No-29), contractor and builder from 18 James Street, Horseshoe Bend, New South Wales and 15 and 19 Dora Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., father of two (Betty & Eileen), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 62. CATHOLIC 2-53. 105.

Born at Queanbeyan, New South Wales on the 6th December 1883 to Andrew Charles and Mary Hayes; husband of Nettie Lavina Hayes nee Bateman (married 1916, Annandale, N.S.W., died 1970, Newcastle, N.S.W.), Harry enlisted September 1914 at Sydney, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 14.8.1915 (sciatica and lumbago), 6.11.1915 (lumbago), Harry was invalided home April 1916, being discharged on the 10th August 1916.

I have not located Mr Hayes’s name inscribed on the Horseshoe Bend Roll of Honour or any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

There is no indication inscribed on Harry’s headstone of his service with the 1st A.I.F., so I will place poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label to honour his duty for God, King and Country.

Lest We Forget.
