James Duncan McLean - 58612
James Duncan McLean’s was born on the 14th of November, 1899 at St Leonards, Sydney, NSW. He attended Sydney Technical High School for an unknown amount of time, however, it is known he was present in class 3A during 1917. After leaving school, he was employed as a lithographic printer for the S F Leighs Company. McLean’s parents were named William R Mclean and Cassie and he had 4 brothers and 2 sisters. McLean was a Presbyterian, but it is unknown how devoted he was.
James Duncan McLean enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on the 12th of February, 1918, near the end of the war. There he served in the 1st to 15th NSW Reinforcements. According to the University of New South Wales[1], McLean’s unit embarked on both the HMAT A18 Wiltshire and the SS Feldmarschall on the same day, 19th of June 1918.
McLean marched in from Australia to the 14th Training Battalion in Godford, England and was allocated to the Rifles of the 55th Battalion on 26th August 1918 and was promoted to Acting Lance Corporal 23rd September 1918. He was taken on strength to the Research Bridage of the Australian Artillery and mstuered as gunner 5th October 1918. The war was over before he was deployed to France in April 1919. He then went on to serve with the Russian Relief Force from June 1919, discharged from the AIF
After World War One, McLean married in 1923 to a person whose identity has been lost to time at Canterbury, NSW. Following this, there is no information about what he did after the war. Tragically, McLean died in 1936 at 36 years old in Randwick, NSW. His body was buried in North Ryde, NSW.
