At attestation he claimed to have been born in Battle in Sussex but his birth registration clearly states he was born in the Maidstone district of Kent.

He was 28 and the son of William & Ellen Sarah Stemp of 3, Virgins Croft, Battle, Sussex, England.
He is remembered on the Battle, Sussex war Memorial which is in the Churchyard of St Mary the Virgin. It takes the form of a wheel cross mounted on a tapering shaft mounted on a plinth with a two-stepped base.
The memorial was unveiled by Rev Canon Cook on 15 February 1920; the designer was Mr G H Brett. The memorial was paid for by the Dean and the Hon. Mrs. Currie according to references in Battle Parish Vestry Book 1896 - 1987 and Battle Church Publication 1920.
