Frederick was born in New South Wales and enlisted in Perth at over 44 years of age. He joined the 51st Battalion in France during April 1916 was captured on 15 August 1916 at Pozieres, France and held as a POW in Germany. He was repatriated to England in December 1918 and embarked to return to Australia in March 1919.
