Theodore Archibald Holle was born on 30th January 1895 in Paddington, New South Wales, Australia (1). Holle was soon baptised on the 13th of March 1895 at the Cathedral Church St. Andrew for the County of Cumberland by F.J. Fead (2). Holle’s father, Herbert George Holle, was an electrical engineer working at various institutions including the Australian military for artillery forces (3) while his mother, Mary Ann Minnie Holle looked after the home. The Holle family resided in Rocklea, Selbourne Street, Burwood.
From 1907-1913, Holle attended Sydney Technical High School where he excelled and studied subjects of mathematics, chemistry, physics, carpentry and drawing in his final years (4) highlighting Holle’s keen interest in art and practical hands-on pursuits. In 1913, after a few months of his final year at Sydney Technical High School, he was issued the Intermediate Technical Bursaries award which enabled Holle to study at Technical College for free as the bursaries award exempted him from any fees (5). Hence, this played a significant role in supporting his future endeavours as a clerk.
On the 5th of January 1915 Holle enlisted in the army section of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) (6). This enlistment may have been inspired by his family heritage, where his father had previously served as a probationary second lieutenant in the New South Wales Artillery Forces (7). As part of Holle’s enlistment process, he had to undergo a series of medical and administrative evaluations. The Certificate of Medical Examination was conducted by C.H.E. Caner, a Captain in the AAMC (Australian Army Medical Corps), ensuring that he was fit for service (8). Additionally, the Certificate of Commanding Officer was certified by Major A. A. Glyde, Commanding Officer of the 1st A.I.E. (Australian Imperial Force) Corps, NSW, allowing Holle to finalise his enlistment for the AIF (9).
On the 12th of February 1915, Holle’s unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board the HMAT A54 Runic. Holle was ranked driver in the 2nd Light Horse Brigade Train (10, playing a crucial role in the logistics and transportation of artillery and supplies. Holle was then later reassigned to the Australian Medical Division Signallers and the Quartermaster's Staff Corps (11) with the responsibilities of ensuring the supply of necessary equipment and medical support to front-line units, crucial for maintaining the operational effectiveness of the troops. Holle was also part of the military operations in the Middle East, he served in Romani, El Arish, and Cairo (12). Landing within the Sinai and Palestine campaigns pushed out the Turks of the Sinai peninsula thus gaining territory and an advantage for the British Empire.
Holle was diagnosed with a debility from the 9th of June 1917 and was hospitalised. (14). He ended up in a convalescent hospital due to his illness.
Due to Holle’s poor health, he invalided back to Australia on the 12th of November 1917 aboard the H.M.A.T. "Wiltshire” (15). Holle was officially discharged on 26 January 1918 (16) due to his medical unfitness.
Following his discharge, Holle filed for a pension due to his military service. On 21st of January 1918, he was granted a pension of 62 shillings per fortnight, effective from 27 January 1918 (17)
In 1919, Holle married Aileen Alice Eves and they had 4 children: Ronald Holle (born December 4, 1920), Doreen Holle (born April 6, 1923), Noel Arthur Holle (born November 26, 1924), and Keith Herbert Holle (born 1932) (18).
Unfortunately, On 16 June 1929, Holle’s mother passed away. His father died, 26 May 1943. His daughter Doreen Holle, died on October 3, 1972. Theodore Archibald Holle himself also passed away on February 10, 1978 aged at 83 years old (19).
