Charles Burton HOLDWAY was born in Indooroopilly, Queensland on 21st September, 1892
His parents were Walter Albert HOLDWAY and Agnes BURTON
He enlisted in Brisbane as a Private on 2nd June, 1915 and embarked with the 9th Battalion, 10th Reinforcements on 5th October, 1915 on the ship Warilda - he served in Egypt, France & England
Charles married Vera Isabel BIRD on 19th November, 1919 in England - two known children - Audrey Doris Vera b. 1920 in England who died in Queensland in 1922 and Heather who was born in Australia
He was promoted to temporary corporal in 1917 and to Corporal & Sergeant in 1918 but then reverted to Private on 23.5.1919 and placed on indefinite leave on 12.11.1919
Charles & his wife Vera & their daughter Audrey arrived in Fremantle, WA in May, 1920 on the ship Wahehe & later ended up in Queensland
He wa discharged from the Army on 3rd October,1920
On 1st May 1942 he re-enlisted in Roma, Queensland for service in WW2 and was with the 19th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps as a Lieutenant
His brothers Walter Adrian HOLDWAY (SN3486) served with the 4th Machine Gun Battalion and returned to Australia in 1919, another brother Frederick John HOLDWAY (SN2440) 49th Battalion also returned to Australia in 1917 and brother George Victor HOLDWAY (SN79039) served in WW2 and also returned to Australia
Charles was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal
He died on 21st July, 1972 and is buried in Roma General Cemetery in Queensland along with his wife Vera and daughter Audrey

1916, 6 Dec: “To hospital sick”.
1916, 18 Dec: “Embarked on HS ‘Brighton’ at Calais for England. D.A.H”. [N.B. Disorderly Action of the Heart – the Military Heart Hospital had not yet moved to the Sobraon Barracks in Colchester, next door to the General Military Hospital]
1916, 18 Dec: Admitted to Colchester Miitary Hospital, with “D.A.H. Mild”.
1917, 8 Mar: Transferred from Colchester, to 1st Australian Hospital, Harefield Park, Middlesex.
1917, 8 Jan: Next of Kin (father) advised Charles was in hospital “18.12.16. Heart Trouble”.
1919, 19 Jan: Married Vera Isabel Bird at St. Saviour’s church, Sunbury Common, Middlesex. The couple had two daughters: Audrey Doris (1920) and Heather Mary (1927).
1920, 17 April: Next of Kin (father) advised Charles was returning to Australia.
1920, 3 Oct: Charles was discharged from the A.I.F. Awarded 1914/15 Star; British War; and Victory Medals.
Charles Burton Holdway died at Roma, Queensland, Australia.
