Son of John Simmons and Martha Simmons of nee Lobley of North Ipswich, QLD. Brother of Arthur Simmons who was killed in action in the Third Battle for Ypres on 4 October 1917 while serving with the 26th Battalion and he has no known grave. His name appears on Menin Gate, Ypres

Commenced return to Australia on 14 January 1919 aboard HT City of York disembarking on 8 March 1919
