Biography contributed by Aubrey Bairstow

Laurits Christian Pedersen was born in Odense, Denmark in 1875. There is some possibility that he may have had service in the Danish military before emigrating to Australia. He stated that he was a coal labourer, aged 41 years when he enlisted in February 1916.

He left Sydney in May 1916 and arrived in England in July of that year. The 45th entered France in September. Laurits’ war was brief. He was shot in the back on 7 January 1917 and died the following day.

He left 3 children and a widow in Ultimo, Sydney and was one of a small number of Danes in the AIF. He was buried at Heilly Station Cemetery Plot V, Row F, Grave 32 . Headstone inscription reads “ Forget him no we never will as years go by we love him still “

Sadly his medals were being sold individually on Facebook marketplace in 2023. I managed to purchase both.
