ABIDE WITH ME
It seems a pity that so promising a young officer should be cut down because he was acting Captain of the company during he big fight and both Officers and Men had great fiath in him as a leader, he was the first over the top and the last to Fall. - Letter from Sgt. Thomas to Mrs. Salmon.
Mr and Mrs E V Salmon, of Emu Park, have received the following letter from Lieutenant-Colonel Imlay relating to the death of their son, Lieutenant Dudley F Salmon -"It is with intense feelings of regret and sense of loss which cannot be restored that I have to confirm the news of the death in action on June 8 of your very gallant son, Lieutenant D F Salmon. I am at a loss to find words in which to express my sorrow and the depths of the sympathy which both officers and men whole heartedly extend to you in your loss, It is our loss, too, believe me Dudley was the life and soul of our mess, and also of the company which he led into action (the company commander being away ill). He performed his onerous task ably and well, cheering his men on capturing his objective, and two days later a shell burst in a trench, killing him and seven others instantly He was burled near by the ground which he had so bravely captured. His unfailing cheerfulness under all sorts of trying conditions had endeared bim to everybody, and the loss of 'Sammy,' as we called him, is keenly felt. His promotion to captain had been recommended before the action, but did not come out in time "
