Leading Aircraftman Gilbert Maxwell Stevenson (Service No:120288) served in the RAAF from 29 October 1942 and was attached to No 12 Squadron at Discharge on 19 November 1945.
Max was born in Warrnambool, Victoria in 1913, second of six children of Gilbert Andrew Amos Stevenson (b1862 in Creswick, Victoria) and his second wife Sara Christina Wilkinson (b1882 at Sutton Grange via Bendigo, Victoria). Gilbert was a Teacher at Werrap in the Wimmera in 1906 when he and Sara married in Bendigo. They moved to Tasmania, where Gilbert was a Teacher in Launceston (he had taught in Launceston and Hobart from 1886), and in 1910, Gilbert was a Teaher at Bagdad via Hobart when he was allocated a subruban plot in Subiaco, Perth WA. By 1913 Gilbert and Sara had returned to Victoria, where they raised their family and Gilbert was a Teacher in Warrnambool. In the early 1920s Gilbert and Sara were in Sebastapol in Ballarat at Napoleons, where Gilbert was Publican and Sara was a Licensed Victualler. In the late 1920s they moved to Cressy, where Gilbert was a Newsagent.
Max worked in Newport (Melbourne Ports) as a Labourer before enlisting in the RAAF. In 1942 in Melbourne, he married Catherine Gertrude Glennon (b1915 in Newport, Melbourne Ports, Victoria) - Catherine was working as a Saleswoman in Melbourne. Following his Discharge, Max and Catherine settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Max worked as a Watchman and Storeman. Max died in 1986 and Catherine in 1995.
