Clifford Hamilton Townend

CLIFFORD HAMILTON TOWNEND (1897-1955) born at Paddington, son of Francis Charles Leslie and Mary Jane Townend nee Ellis. Clifford enlisted to served in WW1 as Private 2690 on June 4th, 1915 at Liverpool – he had served for four years in Senior Cadets. His first placement was with the 8th Reinforcements, 3rd, Battalion. He was sent to France on board the Borda and landed at Alexandria. The battalion then board the Grampian on March 22nd, and landed at Marseille on the 28th. He was wounded in action on August 18th. 1916 – gun-shot wound left arm at Pozieres and transferred to a casualty clearing station. On October 4th,1917 Lance Corporal Townend was again wounded in action and sent to England for treatment on a shell-shot wound in the Arm, resulting in the arm being amputated. He was returned to Australia on April 15th, 1918 on board the Osterley – to be medically discharge on June 22nd. He received th 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Then, at Sydney on May 27th, 1940 enlisted as Private N65601, and served until May 18th, 1943. His final posting was as WO Class 2, DRD Eastern Command.
