Son of John Veal and Mary Elizabeth Veal nee Hoffrichter of Perth, WA formerly of Broken Hill, NSW. Brother of Sydney Veal (Veale) who returned to Australia on 10 December 1917 having served with the 7th Field Ambulance.
Commenced return to Australia on 2 January 1919 aboard HT Karmala
