Albert was the fourth of seven children of Octavius Edgar Alphonso Crutchett(b1866 at Moonta, South Australia) and Mary Emily Scott (b1870 in New Zealand). Octavius - a Surveyor - and Mary married in 1897 in Moonta, South Australia. Octavius worked briefly as a Surveyor in Mandurah, WA before returning to SA. He and Mary settled in Boulder, WA where they raised their family. Octavius was a Mining Engineer, and heavily involved in the mining industry in the Kalgoorlie Region. Octavius and Mary moved to Perth, WA in 1936.

Albert commenced work for WA Government Railways as an Apprentice Fitter in Bunbury in 1918. In 1924 he married Ethel Ilene May Hislop (b1903 in Bunbury, WA) and the couple settled at Northam, WA. Moving to Perth, WA in the early 1930's, Albert enlisted in the RAAF in 1936 as an Aircraftman. He was a Warrant Officer (Service Nos:A3909/2521) attached to 11 Squadron when he was Discharged in 1954. Albert's military service was concurrent with his civilian employment with WAGR.

Albert died in 1970 and Ethel in 1990.
