Dennis self-taught as a bricklayer, concreter, carpenter, landscaper, boat-builder, and administrator. While his 3 sons were sailing his hand-built dinghies, Dennis was progressing through command and management positions with TAA including three years in New Guinea in the mid-1960s. He was Senior Regional Captain, Sydney in the 1970s retiring as a Boeing 727 Captain in 1981 aged 57, having flown 33 years and 20,000 hours for TAA.
