Leading Aircraftman Leo Anthony Hoey (Service No:43196) enlisted in the RAAF on 27 June 1941 as an Aircraftman 1 at No 1 WAGS Ballarat (Trainee Wireless Telegraph Operator). He served with 20 and 10 Signals Units and with No 6 Operational Base Unit (OBU). Leading Aircraftman Hoey was attached to 22 Squadron at Discharge on 1 February 1946.
Born in 1920 in Brisbane QLD, Leo was the youngest of eleven children of George Joseph Hoey (b1874 in Yorkshire, England) and Jane Baxendale (b1879 in Lancashire, England). George (a Joinery Machinist) and Jane married in Lancashire in 1901 and immigrated in 1911, arriving in Brisbane, QLD with their first seven children on board the Ayrshire. The family settled in Brisbane where George was a Woodworking Machinist - in the late 1930s he was a Barman at the Victory Hotel in Gympie (owned by son George Jnr). By 1940 George had returned to Brisbane.
Leo was a Refrigeration Mechanic with the Postmaster General's Department in Brisbane all his working life. In 1948 in Brisbane, Leo married Olive Claire Levian (b1928 in Brisbane, QLD). Leo died in 2006 and Olive in 2014.
