At the timeof enlistment Robert was residing in Beaudesert, QLD.

Son of James Oates and Rosina Oates nee Chirgwin of Austin Street, Footscray, Victoria.

Brother of Nicholas James Oates who was killed in action on 6 August 1916 while serving with the 1st Battalion Imperial Camel Corps and has no known grave. His name appears on Jerusalem Memorial, Panel 60.
