Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Husband of Mary Jane Leehy, of Montana, Coolgardie, Western Australia. Leehy was born at Listowel, Ireland.  He gave his age on enlistment as 44 years 4 months, but his wife stated on his roll of honour form that he was 53 years of age when he died at Pozieres. Irish birth records indicate he may have been 55 years of age. He came to Western Australia when he was about 28 years of age.

Leehy was listed as ‘missing in action’ 25 July 1916 and later changed to ‘killed in action’ after a Court of enquiry held on during June 1917. His wife Mary Jane received a pension of 40 shillings per fortnight. All he had in his personal effects when he was killed was a hymn book and a brush.

His wife, Mary Jane, also had a son killed in action during 1917, a son from a previous marriage, 1010 Sergeant George Faber Kennedy 28th Battalion AIF.
