James Brown was born near Maryborough Queensland, on the 16.1.1889. A Private with Service number 1041, he enlisted on the 16.9.1914, at Blackboy Hill, aged 25 years 8 months. He was a painter and Presbyterian. His mother lived in Bourke St, Leederville. James’ previous service was with F Scottish Regiment, Fremantle. James is described as being 5 feet 4 inches tall, with a chest measurement of 35 -37 inches, dark complexion, blue eyes and black hair. He was appointed to the 11th Infantry Battalion D Company 3rd Brigade at Blackboy Hill and embarked from Fremantle on the 26.10.1914. He was transported to Mudros from Gallipoli on 11.8.1915 with influenza and dysentery and disembarked in Malta on the 16.8.1915 with septic sores. From there, he was sent to the 1st Southern General Hospital in Birmingham, rejoining his unit on 6.3.1916. In April 1916 he was admitted to hospital with influenza, invalided to England and rejoined his battalion on 7.6.16, but was again sent to hospital on 24.11.16 with pneumonia. He proceeded to France on 29.8.16. There were further trips to hospital with scabies, boils and myalgia in late 1916, then in 1917 with mumps. In 8.10.1918 he was granted special leave to return to Australia from Takada, Italy 8.10.18 on the Port Sydney, disembarking on 25.11.18. He was discharged in Perth on 23.1.1919.
