Born in 1924 in Northam WA, Cyril was the second of four children (sons) of Lyndhurst (Bertie) Albert Polain (b1885 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Vera Annie Penniment (b1903 in Kalgoorlie WA). Bertie was a Biograph Showman in Kalgoorlie WA in 1921 when he and Vera married. The couple settled in Northam WA to raise their family and Berite was a Shop Assistant when he died in 1958.

Cyril was working as a Shop Assistant in Northam WA in April 1942 when he enlsited in the Airforce Cadets (Service No:427258; 5 Cadet Wing). He transferred to the RAAF in June 1942 as an Aircraftman II and was a Flying Officer attached to 466 Squadron when he took his Discharge in March 1946. Cyril was attached to the RAF (27 September 1943 - 28 December 1945) and served with 102 (Ceylon) Squadron. He flew Tiger Moths, Avro Ansons, Oxfords, Wellingtons and Halifax III and VI. In July 1945 in Brentford in London, Cyril married Phyllis Marjorie West (b1923 in London, England) - Phyllis was a Court Under-Clerk.

Cyril returned to Perth WA in December 1945, followed by Phyllis in June 1946. The couple settled briefly in Geraldton WA, where Cyril was a Storekeeper before returning to Surrey, England in 1949. The couple settled in Surrey, England where Cyril was a Business Owner/Buyer. In 1965 Cyril was commissioned into the RAF Volunteer Reserve, attached to Air Training Corps. By the late 1970s they returned to WA where they lived in Bull Creek near Fremantle WA, making regular trips beck to England. 

The couple was in England when they both died in 1994 and were buried at Epsom Cemetery.
