Jim

Jim was born in Proserpine on 7th February, 1925, the 7th child of a family of 12 to William & Nellie (Quinn). He received his education at Conway, Mt Marlow & Windemere schools & at the age of 12 left school to become a slaughterman for Bill Morgan, who operated a butcher shop at Mt Marlow. He later left this job working as a station hand & cane cutter before moving to Townsville with the Allied Works Council. In 1943 he joined the RAAF as a rigger & hatch gunner. He was posted to New Guinea at Madang, Aitape & Middleburg Island. He was discharged on 12th February, 1946. He returned to Proserpine, completing a carpenter’s course for Hugg Brothers, Jim Carey & finally Woodman McDonalds where he was manager of the building section. Jim married Noelie Newberry in June 1951 & after living in town for a period purchased a property at Brandy Creek & lived there until his passing. Jim was extremely proud of the fact that his grandparents were one of the early pioneers who first grew cane in this area. Jim passed away in Proserpine Hospital on Tuesday 27th August, he was serviced by his wife Noelie, 6 Children & 14 Grandchildren. His funeral service was held on Friday 30th August at St James Uniting Church the Rev John Williams conducted the church & graveside service & the RSL honoured Jim with a full RSL service.
