Son of Thomas Henry McCARTHY and Ruby Ethel McCARTHY (born Andrew)

Was born in Ballarat. One of 5 chicldren. His mum Ruby passed in 1940 and as a result he enlisted as his siblings had to go to the Ballarat orphanage for a short time. He would visit them regularly in the time they were there. Eventually his dad remarried and he himself went to live with Thomas & Elsie (who was second mum to all) with the other children in Melbourne.

He was a wood turner by trade and eventually met and married after returning to his birthplace of Ballarat, Victoria.

He lived and worked the rest of his life in Ballarat and is buried there with his wife Edna.

He also worked as a publican quite regularly in Ballarat.
