Son of Matthew Silas Venn and Matilda Venn nee Harding of Rhyndaston, Tasmania.
Brother of George James Venn who returned to Australia 29 August 1919 having served with the 2nd Pioneer Battalion; John Henry Venn who was killed in action on 13 June 1918 while serving with the 2nd Pioneer Battalion and is buried in Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, Plot VIII, Row A, Grave 2; Mark Reuben who returned to Australia on 9 January 1920 having served with the 1st Divisional Train.
