Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board

George Henry GIBBS (Service Number 212. NAA uses 717) was born on 24 June 1886 at Shellhaven NSW (sic). He commenced working as a tram conductor in Sydney in March 1909. He became a permanent employee in 1910. He was released to join the Expeditionary Forces in August 1914, only days after the war was declared. Unusually for a man joining the AIF he was married.
He left Australia on HMAT ‘Afric’ on 18 October 1914

He was killed in action on 13 November 1916 in France, and is buried in Quarry Cemetery, Montauban.

George Henry GIBBS was born on 24 June 1886 at Shellhaven NSW (sic). He commenced working as a tram conductor in Sydney in March 1909. He became a permanent employee in 1910 and an electric tram driver in May 1916. He was released to join the Expeditionary Forces in August 1914, only days after the war was declared.
He left Australia on HMAT ‘Afric’ on 18 October 1914
By the time Gibbs arrived at Gallipoli he had attained the rank of Sergeant, though his file contains no record of this promotion.

He was killed in action on at Gallipoli on 13th November, 1915 and is buried in Quarry Cemetery, Montauban.

George Henry GIBBS (Service Number 212. NAA uses 717) was born on 24th June 1886 at Shellhaven NSW (sic).  He commenced working as a tram conductor in Sydney in March 1909. He became a permanent employee in 1910. He was released to join the Expeditionary Forces in August 1914, only days after the war was declared. Unusually for a man joining the AIF he was married.

He left Australia on HMAT ‘Afric’ on 18th October 1914

By the time Gibbs arrived at Gallipoli he had attained the rank of Sergeant, although his file contains no record of this promotion.

He was charged with neglect of duty at Mudros West (on the Greek island of Lemnos) and severely reprimanded. After Gallipoli he joined the Pioneer Battalion and was transported from Alexandria to Marseilles (France) in the transport ‘Ballarat’. He became ill on the voyage and was transferred to hospital. He joined the unit eventually in June 1916. He was killed in action on 13th November 1916, and is buried in Quarry Cemetery, Montauban.
