Son of Frank C SQUIRES, 11 South Street, Strathfield, New South Wales.
John was a trainee accountant before he enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in November 1943. After completing wireless and radar mechanic courses in Adelaide and Sydney, he was then posted to the air base at Richmond in early 1945. In July, John was posted to a radar unit at Maryborough, Queensland. After the war ended, he served in No. 200 (Special Duties) Flight and No. 24 (Bomber) Squadron. He worked on the radar equipment fitted to Liberator bombers.
In April 1946, John was discharged from the RAAF. He says he felt proud that he had contributed and played his part towards the better cause. He recommends that younger serving personnel ‘Go for it! Make the most of your experience’.
After the war, John continued his studies and became a fully qualified accountant. He married and has 3 children.
In his spare time, John played tennis and enjoyed swimming and painting with watercolours. He still likes to paint and now also participates in the activities at the aged care facility.
And the secret to John’s longevity? Good genes, staying fit and active, taking vitamins and living with, and being connected to, his family.
