Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Flight Sergeant Ivan Athol Edwin Norman (Service No:441376) enlisted in the RAAF on 24 July 1943 as an Aircraftman II attached to 5 ED Perth, and in August attended 5 Initial Training School (ITS) Clontarf. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 6 November 1943, LAC Norman attended No 1 Wireless and Gunnery School (WAGS) Ballarat and No 2 Air Observer's School (AOS) Mt Gambier. On 26 April 1944 he was promoted to Sergeant, and served with No 35 Squadron Pearce, flying transport missions to New Guinea. On 24 March 1945 he was promoted to Flight Sergeant and served with No 1 Stores Depot (SD) at Fisherman's Bend (Port Melbourne) in Victoria before Discharge on 13 August 1945.

Born in 1920 in Perth WA, Ivan was the second of three children of Leslie (Les) Athol Hornbrook Norman (b1884 in Hamilton, New Zealand) and Theodora Ivy Constance Mary Sadler (b1888 in Guildford, WA). Les (a Clerk) and Theodora married in 1917 in Bridgetown, WA - Les had worked as a Junior Porter for WAGR from 1899 to 1903 and then as a Clerk. Les and Theodora settled in Perth until 1927, when Les deserted his family and moved to the Eastern States where he worked on the wharves and, according to Court records (Trove), became addicted to cocaine stolen from ships he was unloading. In 1935 he returned to WA and was arrested at Yalgoo on a warrant from the Children's Court for failing to provide for his three children.

Ivan started work as an Observer at the Waterloo Observatory WA, and having completed a Broadcast Operator's Certificate of Proficiency, was employed by the Post Master General's Department as a Radio Mechanic and Storeman. In 1940 in Fremantle WA, Ivan married Lillian Violet Staton (b1918 in Fremantle, WA), and following his Discharge in 1945, Ivan worked as a Radio Technician in Perth. Ivan and Lillian divorced in 1947 and both remarried - Ivan in 1950 in Fremantle WA to Patricia Margaret Leahy (b1925 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Patricia was working as a Laboratory Technician. Ivan and Patricia settled in Fremantle where Ivan was a Radio Technician, before moving to North Beach. Ivan died in 1987 and Patricia in 1988.
