Sergeant Percy John Ireland (Service No:22815) first enlisted in the Army (Private; Service No:QX186) and was attached to 1st Field Park 6th Division RAE when he was Discharged (Medically Unfit) on 14 March 1940. He enlisted in the RAAF on 8 July 1940 as an Aircraftman I, and mustered initially as an Armourer, then as a Guard and Carpenter. Described in his Attestation papers as a 'Good sound tradesman with wide experience' (National Archives Australia) ACI Ireland was a Leading Aircraftman (1 May 1941), Corporal (1 October 1941) and Sergeant (1 September 1942) and served at Richmond, Ascot Vale, Bundaberg, Darwin, Sandgate, Rathmines and Adelaide. Sergeant Ireland was attached to 6 Transport and Movements Office at Discharge on 26 November 1945.

Born in 1905 in Strathpine QLD, Percy was the fourth of eight children of John Ireland (b1877 in Strathpine, QLD) and Leah Green (b1880 in Brisbane, QLD). John (a Contractor) and Leah married in 1899 in Brisbane, QLD and lived in Brisbane, Strathpine and South Pine where John was a Contractor, Farmer, Labourer and Concrete Worker.

Percy started work in Brisbane as an Apprentice Coach Bodybuilder and also worked as Concrete Drainer. In 1927 he married Agnes O'Connor (b1906 in Gympie, QLD) and was a Motor Mechanic in 1940 when he enlisted in the RAAF. Percy and Agnes settled in Brisbane where Percy was a Sub Foreman and Bodybuilder. Percy died in 1978 and Agnes in 1982.
