Charles was wounded in action, 19 July 1916 (shrapnel wound, abdomen), and admitted to 8th Field Ambulance; then transferred to 8th Casualty Clearing Station, 21 July 1916, where he died of wounds at 6.15 p.m.
His older brother, 4341 Pte. Louis John Woodland 5th Battalion AIF, died of wounds on 15 October 1918, aged 30.
Another brother, 2514 Pte Arthur Woodland, 57th Battalion AIF, returned to Australia, 21 March 1919.
