'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When his section commander became a casualty, he took command and, pushing forward, was the first to reach a battery of 5.9 inch guns which were in action. These were quickly silenced and the crews captured. In several days' fighting, he showed keeness and resource as a patrol leader.'
