Son of John Thomas Hayes and Catherine Hayes of Bale Street, Moree, NSW. Brother of Gordon John Hayes who returned to Australia on 25 May 1919 having served with the 1st Light Horse Regiment

Commenced return to Australia on 12 July 1918 aboard HT Port Darwin disembarking on 18 August 1918

Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

In 1935 he was residing in Church Street, Caboolture, QLD

During 1940c Francis married Elinor Mary Bedford in Moree, NSW
